have you ever noticed, in fairytales, true love only happens to those with tragic beginnings?
cinderella was an orphan exploited by her stepmother;
sleeping beauty was cursed to sleep forever;
snow white was also an orphan, poisoned for her beauty;
the little mermaid sacrificed her voice and identity to be closer with the one she loves (sidenote: the real story did not have a happy ending like the disney one);
how about in modern stories? take for example, some of meg cabot's stories:
Avalon High: heroine was forced to move away from her hometown because of her parents' sabbatical;
The Mediator: heroine was forced to mediate between ghosts, and her parents are separated
or one of the hottest teenage stories on the market now:
Twilight: heroine begrudgingly moved to a small town because her parents are separated, she finds it hard to fit in
The Vampire Diaries: heroine's parents died
moral of the story?
nobody likes to read about too lucky people, who have everything and also fall in love. stories are fantasies, not to be confused with reality. but still, a tragic beginning and a happy ending is much more preferable than a happy beginning and a tragic ending.
i'm still waiting for my love story to be written...
